Guardians of the Blue Nation: Honoring Today’s Heroes, Protecting Tomorrow’s Ocean

In celebration of the 81st Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia, SD Darma Bangsa held a series of activities under the theme “Guardians of the Blue Nation: Honoring Today’s Heroes, Protecting Tomorrow’s Ocean.” This theme encouraged students to understand that the spirit of heroism is not only reflected in the struggles of heroes in the past, but can also be demonstrated through meaningful actions to protect the environment and build a better future for Indonesia.

The celebration began with several classroom activities. Students worked on puzzles and participated in discussions about environmental problems around them. Through these activities, students were encouraged to identify problems, express their opinions, and think of simple solutions. These activities reflected the Analytic and Problem Solving value while also building Confidence, as students were given opportunities to share their ideas and opinions.

One of the most meaningful classroom activities was creating collages of heroes’ faces using food packaging waste. Materials that were usually considered useless were transformed into creative works of art. This activity developed students’ Creativity while also raising awareness about the importance of reusing waste. Students learned that protecting the environment can begin with simple and creative actions.

Students were also invited to share their ideas about “Who is a hero today?” Through this activity, they learned that heroes do not always have to be people who fought on the battlefield. Teachers, doctors, sanitation workers, parents, volunteers, and people who protect the environment can all be considered modern-day heroes through their contributions to society. This activity helped students understand that everyone has the opportunity to become a hero through everyday acts of kindness and responsibility.

The classroom activities were followed by a series of exciting competitions, including the Color Ball Sorting Competition, Ball Transfer Using a Holed Plate, Waste Sorting Competition, Coding Relay, Water Ball-Blowing Relay, Ocean Rescue Mission, and Water Bottle Filling Relay.

Each competition was designed to develop students’ character in accordance with the SDB Core Values. The various challenges encouraged Analytic and Problem Solving, as students had to observe, develop strategies, and find ways to complete each task. Creativity and Confidence were also developed as students were encouraged to try different strategies, take responsibility, and demonstrate their abilities.

The relay activities strengthened Discipline and Endurance. Students had to follow instructions, wait for their turns, complete their responsibilities, and keep trying when they faced difficulties. Meanwhile, activities related to waste, water, and ocean rescue encouraged Empathy and Kindness toward the environment and reminded students that protecting nature is a shared responsibility.

Through the competitions, students also learned the importance of Fairness and Honesty and Respect. They practiced following the rules, being honest, respecting their opponents, supporting their teammates, and accepting the results of the competition gracefully. Therefore, winning was not the only goal. The activities provided opportunities for students to learn about teamwork, sportsmanship, and positive character.

The 81st Independence Day celebration at SD Darma Bangsa was more than just a celebration. Through classroom activities, creative projects, discussions, and competitions, students were encouraged to connect the spirit of heroism with environmental responsibility.

Through the theme Guardians of the Blue Nation, students learned that becoming a modern-day hero can begin with simple actions: having the courage to share ideas, helping others, reusing waste, keeping the environment clean, saving water, and protecting nature.

Because every child can be a hero, and every small action can protect tomorrow’s ocean.
